Visit the Center for the Arts Evergreen for the opening reception of this incredible photography exhibit and walk among the winning bird photographs from this year's Audubon Photography Awards. Several workshops and events are scheduled throughout the month featuring professional photographers, artists and birders sharing their expertise and enthusiasm for wildlife art. Be sure to see the events listed below and register.


ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
Selected from more than 5,500 entries, the winning photos show birdlife at its most visible, vulnerable, formidable, and elegant. Photographers from 49 states and eight Canadian provinces submitted images in three categories: professional, amateur, and youth. A panel of five judges had the daunting task of sifting through the stunning images and grading them based on technical quality, originality, and artistic merit.

YEAR OF THE BIRD: Audubon Photography Exhibit and Related Events

To celebrate the Year of the Bird, Evergreen Audubon joins with the Center for the Arts Evergreen and the Evergreen Camera Club to jointly host the 2017 Audubon Photography Awards Show, featuring larger-than-life prints of the top 12 photographs, plus our addition of Evergreen photographer Ellen Nelson's winning photo. The show opens with a Reception on Thursday evening, June 7, at 5 pm and runs through June 27 at the Center for the Arts on Rocky Village Road, Bergen Park, Evergreen.

Capturing Nature on the Fly!

Meet at Center for the Arts Evergreen, 31880 Rocky Village Rd. with Marilyn Rhodes and Dave Masters, experienced local birders and photographers.

After touring the photography exhibit, we'll go across the street to beautiful Buchanan Park, which should be teeming with birds in June.
Marilyn and Dave will you help locate and ID birds and wildlife. Dave, a well-known local photographer, will offer tips on how to observe and shoot birds at the same time. Buchanan Park is also home to the Evergreen Community Garden. In early bloom in June, it should also offer some interesting photo ops.

Origami Fun! Making Birds Out of Paper

Meet at Evergreen Nature Center, Warming Hut, Evergreen Lake
With Ruthann Fisher.

Origami is the oriental art of paper folding. A small number of
basic folds can be combined to make intricate designs. Learn
to take a perfect square paper sheet and fold it to create
birds, animals, and flowers. Join a fun and informal class for
children and adult beginners. Children under 8 need a parent
with them. Special origami paper will be on hand. Ruthann
first learned origami as a child and has continued refining her
skills to develop a lifelong love of the art.

Tour the photo exhibit, then travel to Evergreen lake, host to a variety of fish, birds, insects, and vegetation, and the Evergreen Audubon Nature Center. We'll tour the Nature Center, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. John Ellis, Evergreen Park & Rec District and Evergreen Metro District Board Member, will share his knowledge of lake flora and fauna and lake conservation and management. Marilyn will offer her expertise on the menu and brews at the LLBC.

Wildlife Photography and Beyond!

Meet at the Center for the Arts Evergreen, 31880 Rocky Village Rd. With Jackie Crivello and the Raptors from HawkQuest.

Learn wildlife photography from Jackie Crivello! Bring your camera to photograph three birds of prey. We will have a mature Bald Eagle that we will photograph in free flight, along with several other raptors including an owl. Crivello is an internationally published outdoor/nature photographer whose photography combines extreme action with striking detail. We will drive to the Yellow Barn to photograph these incredible birds. The early start time ensures better lighting.
Who was John James Audubon, Bird Artist?

John James Audubon was determined to paint all of America's birds in their natural settings and as realistically as possible. He perfected mounting techniques and developed new methods of painting the delicate plumages. Learn more about Audubon's art in this evening lecture and enjoy viewing a small collection of Audubon prints from his monumental achievement, The Birds of America (1827-1839).

With Lynne Milliken, local Evergreen artist.

Focusing on birds at Evergreen Lake, Lynne Milliken aids bird
lovers to quickly and accurately record sightings in a sketch
book. Using minimal tools, participants learn to recognize
and draw forms, shapes, and relevant markings. You'll need a
comfortably sized sketch book (spiral bound) no smaller than
8"x6" and no larger than 11"x14", #2 or 2B pencils, clean eraser,
small set of colored pencils, a ground mat or low stool, and
binoculars. Scopes will be available.
