The Strength of Drawing: Prep to better painting Intro Workshop with Denali Brooke

Saturday, August 22 from 11 am-2:30 pm – sketching and drawing

No matter what medium you use, this 3.5-hour workshop is perfect for anyone who wants to be better at drawing.  It starts with basic drawing materials and wraps up with the use of pastel, but can be helpful for anyone using any medium – oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel.  Pastel is “color drawing” and a great medium to sketch a preliminary study.  No matter what your preferred medium, this workshop will help you develop a stronger set of preliminary drawings, both monochromatically and in full color to use as reference for a final painting AND offer you a taste of the in-depth techniques you can learn in Denali’s upcoming fall classes.

About the Artist  Denali began her art career in the Land of Enchantment, Albuquerque, where she has won numerous national show awards, including an International Association of Pastel Society’s award in 2019.  She has been teaching since 2013 as a pastel landscape and figure drawing instructor, and is now a visiting instructor at the New Mexico Art League. She earned a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts in 1987. She moved to Evergreen in November 2019.  Denali’s art instruction is driven by the philosophy that everyone possesses a capacity to overcome any challenge.  Along with regular skill-building practice, artists draw from their wisdom and experience to create.  Experimentation is key to breaking free of old habits and is a big component of Denali’s teaching.  The “failure” that may result from trying something new gives the artist more information about how to proceed when challenges arise.  Through effective communication and the non-judgmental nurturing space she creates, Denali helps her students move past their comfort zone to discover methods that are more congruent with their creative ambitions. Because each person already possesses an inherent capacity to problem-solve, she guides artists to “direct” their own experiences.  As a result, students drive the course of their creative journey, building confidence and courage in their progress.See more about her at denalibrooke.com

“Denali is one of the most generous and sincere humans you will meet. Her artwork will make you feel her energy; her teaching will help you find your way; and her determination and strength will inspire you.” ~ Dawn Emerson
