Simplify the confusion around how to achieve harmonious color in your painting by introducing the idea of a “mother color” or “harmonious complements” into your work. Too many paintings suffer from the malady of “garish brights.” Tame that dragon in this simple approach to color that tones it down and allows all colors “play well” with one another. The effect can have a greater emotional impact in your work, add drama, and “intelligence” to your paintings. Short critique on the final day. Must have control of your medium in Oil, acrylic, pastel, or watercolor. For both representational and abstract painters, novice to advanced skill levels.

Materials and Supplies

  • Your normal painting set up and supplies, pochade box, and tripod/French easel.
  • Paint and palette (at least a warm and cool version of the primaries and whatever other colors you normally use.)
  • Odorless mineral spirits and medium, etc.
  • Some cotton rags (old T-shirts work great for this.)
  • A small sketchbook for doing thumbnail sketches.
  • A pad of canvas paper for doing exercises in paint (any size from 6×8 to 9×12 are best for these quick studies.)
  • Headlamp and a booklight or 2 that can be attached to your easel and palette for the nocturne portion of the class.
  • Notebook for taking notes.
