What happens when you take a loose watercolor painting style to the edge of abstraction but not quite? Not just loose but next-level loose!

Join Steve Griggs for a one-day workshop where he will teach you his next level loose style of painting. Next level loose means starting with a blank sheet of paper, without sketching or guidelines, and creating fresh, energetic, engaging paintings. The goal is to avoid painting static scenes and instead create a story on the page that the viewer can’t help but enter.

During Steve’s Next Level Loose workshop you’ll learn about design and composition, painting techniques to achieve that ‘edge of abstraction’ look, and which elements attract a viewer and draws them in.

Through a combination of painting demonstrations and opportunities for you own painting practice, Steve will introduce you to his unique style of painting. Come prepared to be challenged, moved out of your comfort zone, marvel at your success, and laugh along the way.

Paint – I use Daniel Smith almost exclusively. Winsor Newton or VanGogh Watercolors are fine for workshop and class use if you prefer.

The following colors are recommended:

  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Cadmium Red Light
  • Cadmium Yellow Light
  • New Gamboge OR Gamboge
  • Mars OR Lunar Black
  • White Gouache

These additional colors are completely optional:

  • Cobalt Blue
  • Manganese Blue
  • Burnt Sienna OR Paynes Gray OR Neutral Tint
  • Cobalt Turquoise
  • Quinacridone Gold

Brushes – The best quality you have or are able to purchase

  • One round big, mop/quill-shaped
  • One round pointed brush (sable or squirrel)
  • One rigger or needle point for fine details and lines
  • Small round brushes sized #8, 10, 12 (I like Escoda Versatil or Princetone Neptune or DaVinci)
  • 1” flat

Paper

  • Arches OR Fabriano 300 grams rough texture 140 lb. (that can be taped to a wood painting board for support). It is best to use ¼ or ½ sheet size, but of course, you can paint in any size you feel comfortable using. I will demonstrate on ¼ or ½ size sheets.
  • Sketchbook – Arteza Watercolor 9” x 12” (or something comparable)
