Meagan Andersen

Meagan Andersen is born and raised in Colorado and is so proud to call Evergreen her home! When she was younger, she always loved two things: making art and working with children. She began her higher education on a path to teaching and was on her way to becoming an art teacher when she discovered art therapy. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Metropolitan State University of Denver, she went on to receive her Master of Arts Art Therapy from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana. Meagan is an art therapist as her primary career, co-founding the non-profit Mountain HeArt Therapy, operating out of Evergreen and Denver. But she absolutely loves her art classes here at the center! Having worked with kids for almost three decades, Meagan understands the importance of providing alternative outlets for kids besides athletics and technology and always encourages her students to tap into their imaginations and let their creativity soar! She thoroughly enjoys watching children’s art flourish from an idea to a finished product. Art has the amazing power to release the areas of the mind that have been locked up due to any number of experiences. She truly believes in the inherent healing nature that art provides, and she is thrilled to be able to bring that power to her students outside of a therapeutic setting. Meagan runs many art classes throughout the year for kids and adolescents as well as several summer camps throughout the summer. She resides in Evergreen with her partner, Rodney, and their three incredible children.

Estelle Blum

As an artist and educator, I am passionate about nurturing creativity and helping students discover their unique artistic voices. With experience teaching a wide range of visual art classes—from introductory courses for younger students to technical stained glass workshops—I have developed a flexible and empathetic teaching style that meets students where they are and encourages them to grow. I believe in the importance of experimentation and exploration, creating a learning environment where students feel inspired to try new techniques and express themselves authentically. Six years ago, I dove into glasswork as a self-taught artist. My experience as a production artist allowed me to refine my technical skills and deepened my passion for sharing this craft with others. In my personal practice, I am driven by a desire to push the boundaries of traditional glasswork, venturing into the realms of stained glass, neon, and borosilicate flamework. I find passion in exploring how these various glass mediums can inform and elevate one another. When I’m not immersed in glasswork, I am pursuing a degree in psychology, with a focus on childhood development and arts therapy. This intersection of art and well-being informs my teaching and allows me to approach education with a deeper understanding of its emotional and developmental impact. Before this, I worked as a certified aquaponics horticulturist with three years of experience in cultivation, which has also shaped my holistic and adaptable approach to learning and teaching. Fostering connections through education, art, and wellness is what propels me forward and fulfills my heart. Whether working with children discovering their creative voices or adults mastering intricate techniques, I strive to create a classroom experience that inspires curiosity, confidence, and joy in the artistic process. Let’s uncover the heart of your art together!

CLASSES TAUGHT: LITTLES CAMPS, MIDDLES CAMPS

Katy Clark

Since trying pottery at age 11, art has been a fundamental part of my life. This led me to study Communications at the University of Wisconsin-Madison while minoring in Art History, Studio Art, and Education Services. The connection of these courses allowed me to discover the incredible impact of creativity on mental health and well-being. The realization drove me to become an art teacher with a strong commitment to ensuring that children have access to art education. To support this mission, I founded a nonprofit called "Katy's Clay." I use the proceeds from teaching and pottery sales to provide creative outlets to underfunded schools in developing countries. From October 2022 to May 2023, I had the privilege of working with schools in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, teaching art and supplying materials to students. Witnessing the spark of creativity in the eyes of these young minds and the transformative power of art in their lives has been an incredibly fulfilling experience. I believe that creativity is a universal language and that all children should have the opportunity to express themselves through art. Through CAE and Katy's Clay, I'm committed to making this vision a reality for young minds. Find Katy on Instagram @katysclayco and https://www.facebook.com/katysclay/

CLASSES TAUGHT: INTRO TO PORTRAIT PAINTING

Katherine Drummond

Katherine Drummond is a homeschool parent and a small business owner. As a young child Katherine loved to create and make.  Unfortunately, there weren’t many outlets for her to use her creativity and grow as an artist. She first learned to make wheel-thrown pottery in 2005 when she was getting her teaching degree. The pottery studio was where her creativity really soared, and she spent many long hours learning the art form while getting her degree as an educator.  Since that time she has worked as an elementary teacher and been a community member in a variety of pottery studios. She has also built out her own home studio where she can create freely and has the privilege of sharing her work online, in galleries, the National Parks gift shops and a variety of art markets. Katherine is a big believer that clay is magic. It offers a unique experience that just can’t be found in other art forms. Children rarely have the ability to get wet and messy in a classroom setting and creating a safe space for them to do this provides them a joyful freedom and growth in an endless array of skills. This freedom is invaluable in creating self-esteem and self-expression. Working with clay is a sensory experience developing motor skills, problem solving, discipline and pride.  It’s also uniquely therapeutic using both sides of the brain at the same time. Katherine thinks everyone should work with clay and that it is very character building. You can find her work at www.pennyandpearlstudio.com

Tanya Garza

Inspired by function, my pottery begs to be used. All my pots are made with high fire stoneware and made to be enjoyed in everyday life. My work is only complete when someone has filled a mug with tea or used a bowl for soup. While making practical vessels, I embrace a variety of options in surface decoration. From juicy glaze combinations that drip over one another, to sgraffito, Mishima, or the use of sprigs…there is no end to the exploration of adding aesthetics to a functional pot. While focusing on its future use, I love the process of creating unique designs. My inspiration can come from symbols, Zen tangles, sacred geometry, Asian influences, or my interest in texture. Pottery found me as a stat at home mom, needing an outlet 18 years ago. Once the clay spoke to me, I could not leave it. Throwing pots on the wheel felt a bit like coming home. It has become part of my family, as I have a home studio which my kids have full access to create whatever they wish. I find great joy in sharing clay and pottery making; whether it is someone who wants to buy my work, or wants to learn to make a mug themselves, or a toddler squishing a ball of clay between their little fingers, or another pottery who can talk glaze and form until the sun rises! Working with clay is a very grounding. I feel that a spiritual connection transfers to the pts I make. There is a certain intimacy created when someone reaches for their favorite coffee mug every morning. Creating pottery that can be a part of someone’s daily ritual, or a family gathering is something I hold great reverence for.

Paula Marquez

Paula is a native Coloradan who has always had a passion for nature. She sees the connection between nature and mankind as a partnership, and believes that in order to work together successfully, there must be a mutual understanding and respect. A perfect example of this is with plants: Plants give us food, nutrients and medicine and all they ask for in return is simply love. Her passion for helping others began in the medical field as she took premedical classes in college while working as a medical assistant and learning some of the ins and outs of western medicine. However, her path took her to teaching rather than medical school. During this time, she learned the importance of patience and developed the ability to explain things on each individual’s level. She has since moved on to herbalism. In this realm she has the ability to combine both of her background careers in order to help others with their healing journey while also being able to educate regarding health, nutrition, and healing. When Paula is not in her apothecary, she can be found hiking the hills in Colorado, traveling the world, reading a good book, or spending time with her family.

I want everyone’s brains to be happy.”

After taking art classes in college she almost changed her major to art, but her practical side won out and she obtained her nursing degree from the University of Utah.
