KATHLEEN LAURIE

Kathleen Laurie is a ceramic artist by choice/fate with a degree in art. Her work consists of
layers of texture, glazes and mysterious details. She is influenced by Abstract
Expressionism, Asian ink brushwork and nature. Clay allows for inventiveness with so many
tools, techniques and historical references. While clay has been her focus as a potter in the
Colorado Potters Guild, she branches out as a painter to segue surface decoration usually
applied to clay onto paper and canvas; a shift in creativity and intention

ARTIST STATEMENT: Imagine shifting gears midstream after a long career in ceramic art. My surfaces on clay are highly textured and layered, originating from a foundation of drawing, printmaking, collage and painting. The use of these techniques in other media has been relegated to the back burner of ‘someday’. That someday is now. My intention for studio time at CAE is to refocus and apply the surface processes I use in clay work to paper, canvas and board.
