Travel Journaling with Watercolor with Janet Schaus
Saturday, February 21 (1-Day Workshop)
12:00 – 3:00 PM
$45 CAE Members / $50 Non-Members
Minimum Students: 5 / Maximum Students: 16

Discover the art of slowing down and truly seeing the world around you. Whether your adventures take you across the globe or no farther than your backyard, travel journaling is a powerful way to record, remember, and connect with your surroundings. This workshop invites you to explore watercolor as a portable, expressive, and deeply personal way to capture your experiences.

With a focus on observation, reflection, and creative expression—not perfection—you’ll learn how journaling helps you notice details a photo alone can’t capture. Your journal may include sketches, notes, fully rendered mini-paintings, or a blend of all three. We’ll discuss how centuries of artists and explorers have used this time-honored practice long before smartphones and how your own journal entries can instantly transport you back to moments, places, and memories.

In this hands-on workshop, we will explore:

  • How to create pages that reflect you—your interests, aesthetics, and sense of place
  • Approaches to sketching nature scenes, urban environments, flora and fauna, and geographic details
  • Travel-friendly watercolor palettes, journals, and brush options
  • How to pack and carry supplies for easy, spontaneous painting

Once you’re comfortable with the process, your journal can travel anywhere: the top of a ski hill, the plane window at sunset, your back deck with morning coffee, a Parisian café table, or a peaceful mountain trail.
