Join artist Gail Wager for an inspiring four-week exploration into the world of abstract art. Whether you’re brand new to painting or looking to deepen your creative voice, this class is designed to encourage experimentation, curiosity, and joyful discovery.

Through guided demonstrations and hands-on practice, you’ll learn:

  • The many possibilities of acrylic paint and mixed media
  • Principles of strong, balanced design
  • How to work with a limited palette to achieve beautiful color harmony
  • How to discover the shapes, marks, and combinations that feel uniquely “you”
  • How to loosen up, explore, and truly play

By the end of the session, expect to feel more connected to your signature style—and to have had a whole lot of fun along the way!


Supply List

  • Sketchbook
  • Watercolor paper (Arches 140 lb) or canvas
  • Palette
  • Paper towels
  • Inexpensive brushes
  • Acrylic paints: bring what you have, or start with primary colors in warm + cool versions
  • Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Yellow Light
  • Alizarin Crimson, “Primary” or Cadmium Red
  • French Ultramarine Blue, Thalo Blue
  • Black and White
  • Gesso (optional)
  • Matte or gloss acrylic medium
  • Mark-making tools: pens, pencils, china markers, oil pastels, crayons
  • Collage paper (magazines work great!)
  • Optional: Gelli plate for creating your own collage papers

    Gail Wager

    With a B.A. in Fine Arts from Principia College and a Master’s in Art Education from Southern Connecticut State College, Gail brings a rich blend of academic training and hands-on experience to the classroom. She has taught art to students in grades 1–6 and adult education programs in New Haven, Connecticut.

    Her dedication to lifelong learning has led her to take classes at the Art Students League in both New York City and Denver. She has studied extensively with accomplished artists including Laura Mehmert and Susie Hyer, and continues to grow her own creative practice through local workshops and an ongoing virtual course with abstract artist and mentor Pam Caughey.

    Passionate about fostering artistic exploration at every stage of life, Gail creates a space where students can explore, express, and evolve through their work.
