MARK KIRSCHBAUM

My artistic career began using pen and ink and computer graphics in my work as a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and Colorado School of Mines, eventually publishing over a 100 graphic works in geologic articles. This work taught me design and color theory.  It was a natural progression into pencil sketching and watercolor painting and I have now been painting for over 30 years.  Workshops with Buffalo Kaplinski, Stephen Quiller, IS Green, Cheng Khee Chee, and Steve Griggs helped teach me in the challenging process of watercolor painting.  I have participated in the Artists of Evergreen Open Door Studios Tour in 2008, Rocky Mountain Watermedia show in 2019, and various shows at Center for the Arts Evergreen.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My paintings are inspired by impressionism and abstract expressionism and are greatly influenced by observations I’ve made as a field geologist. In my landscapes, the goal is to combine elements of both realism and abstraction.
